Background of the Study
Childhood obesity is an emerging public health challenge in urban centers worldwide, including Lagos State, Nigeria. School health programs have been identified as an effective strategy to promote healthy lifestyles, improve nutrition, and increase physical activity among children. In Lagos State, various initiatives—such as nutrition education, physical activity sessions, and health screenings—are integrated into the school curriculum to combat rising obesity rates (Olayinka, 2023). These programs not only address dietary habits and sedentary behaviors but also involve parents and communities in creating supportive environments for children. Evidence from recent studies suggests that comprehensive school-based interventions can significantly reduce the incidence of obesity and its related health complications, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Adebisi, 2024). However, challenges such as inadequate funding, limited infrastructure, and variable program quality persist, affecting the overall impact of these initiatives. Evaluating the effectiveness of school health programs in Lagos State is essential for informing policy decisions and optimizing strategies to promote healthy growth and development among children (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of various school health programs in Lagos State, childhood obesity rates continue to rise, indicating gaps in program effectiveness. Many schools face challenges such as insufficient resources, lack of trained personnel, and limited integration of health education with broader curriculum activities. Furthermore, the impact of these programs is often diluted by external factors such as the proliferation of unhealthy food options and sedentary lifestyles outside of school. The absence of regular monitoring and evaluation exacerbates these issues, making it difficult to assess the true impact of school-based interventions on obesity prevention. Without targeted improvements, the continued rise in childhood obesity may lead to increased long-term health problems and greater healthcare costs, highlighting the need for a comprehensive evaluation of these programs (Chukwuma, 2023).
